In Conversation: Dalton Zongshian Lu Shares With Us His Vision and Passion for Authenticity in Film.

Most stories come alive by a magical touch and a lot of hard work in the film business world fraught with challenges. Dalton Zongshian Lu, a Producer based in LA with career footprints spanning Taiwan, China, and the US for more than one decade, is enough evidence that a craft in storytelling and authenticity within the magic of cinema does exist.

He shares his inspirations and the many challenges he faced on set, as well as gives an all-rounded insight into his filmmaking journey in this exclusive interview with sceneforscene.com.

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Dalton – Of course! My name is Dalton Zongshian Lu, and I’m an LA-based producer and director. I’ve always had a passion for storytelling and cinema, which has led me to pursue this incredible career in filmmaking.

2. What encouraged you to pursue a career in filmmaking?

Dalton – I fell in love with cinema when I was just 13 years old. There was something magical about it that drew me in. When I finally committed myself to filmmaking, I realized the profound power of cinema. Being on set with a dedicated crew, all working together to create something phenomenal, makes me feel invincible. I truly believe cinema has the power to change the world by shaping people’s opinions and perspectives, bringing them closer, and bridging ideological gaps.

3. How would you say your experience in the commercial industry affects or influences your work as a film producer now?

Dalton – When you’re working in commercials, it’s very product-driven. You constantly have to find a balance between creativity and the client’s needs, which involves a lot of negotiation. In filmmaking, I treat the story as my client. I constantly check in with my “client” – the story – to ensure we are both aligned and accomplishing what we set out to achieve.

4. You have had the privilege to work as a producer in Taiwan and China as well as here in the United States. Can you share with us what you would say are some of the differences in production practices in these places?

Dalton – It’s quite different, indeed. One of the biggest differences I’ve noticed is the focus. In the U.S., the crew tends to focus more on people, ensuring everyone’s well-being and input is considered. In Asia, the focus is more on the work itself. It’s a funny contrast – in the U.S., you might have a coffee break to discuss ideas, whereas in Asia, it’s all about getting the job done as efficiently as possible.

5. What would you say is the most difficult part of being a producer on a film?

Dalton – Communication, definitely. Balancing the needs and expectations of the crew, the cast, and the department heads can be quite challenging. As a producer, it’s my responsibility to make sure everyone is safe and doing well, both physically and mentally, on set.

6. What inspired you to produce “Anywhere the Wind Blows”?

Dalton – The story behind it is deeply personal to me. While I was in Taiwan, I closely watched the events in Hong Kong, especially during the Sunflower Movement, which inspired many Hong Kongers to fight for their freedom. Seeing the protests and their aftermath was heartbreaking. When I read the script for “Anywhere the Wind Blows” and Jay reached out to me, I knew this was a story I wanted to tell. It’s about raising awareness on human rights and giving people hope even when things seem bleak.

7. The film has some strong and some subtle themes of political persecution, love, and trauma. Considering your background, how important was it for you that this film had those themes?

Dalton – That’s a great question. For me, all these themes are equally important because they represent real-life experiences. Political persecution causes trauma, which in turn can lead to profound love in unexpected places. It’s like a symphony with different instruments – some themes are subtle, and some are strong, but together they create a complete and compelling narrative.

8. The title of the film “Anywhere the Wind Blows” sounds like a strong message. What inspired the choice of that title for the film?

Dalton – The theme of diaspora is the backbone of the story. Refugees are like dandelions – they move only when the wind blows, unable to settle and take root. The wind represents both motivation and uncertainty for our protagonist, Alex. It’s a powerful metaphor for their journey.

9. As the film’s producer, can you share some insights into the development process and how you think that was different from any other projects you have worked on?

Dalton- Every project is unique, but they all share a common purpose: authenticity, humanity, and love. I’ve worked on various topics, from post-partum depression to immigrant issues and cross-generation family dynamics. Each project requires a deep commitment to telling authentic stories that resonate with audiences.

10. Can you also share with us any memorable moments you had during the production of this film?

Dalton – One of the most memorable moments was the day we shot the protest scene. It took me back to 2014 in Hong Kong, seeing protesters being arrested and attacked. The emotion of that day was overwhelming and reminded me of the importance of telling these stories.

11. As cinematic and thematic as this film is as a short, what really would you want the audience to take away from it when they watch it?

Dalton – I want the audience to take away a sense of memory. The world is changing so fast that people often forget important events. This film serves as a reminder that even though the world moves on quickly, the stories and struggles of people should not be forgotten. It’s about connecting the past, present, and future, fostering a deeper understanding and empathy for those who continue to fight for a better world.

12. What impact would say, did having your film shown at Cannes Short Film Corner and the American Pavilion have on your career and your perspective as a film producer?

Dalton – It’s definitely been a highlight of my career. Although I didn’t attend the festival in person due to work commitments, having three films shown at Cannes this year was a huge honor. Seeing other fantastic films at one of the world’s most prestigious festivals reminded me to stay grounded, focus on storytelling, and continue sharing meaningful stories with the world.

13. Can you share with us some details about your next project?

Dalton – Absolutely! My next project is a documentary focused on Taiwanese Americans. While I can’t share too many details just yet, it delves into themes of immigration, identity, and the eco-social dilemmas faced by different generations.

14. Lastly, what advice can you give to aspiring producers and directors looking to make their mark in the industry?

Dalton – It might sound cliché, but my advice is to stay true to yourself and remember why you’re here in the first place. The industry can be brutal and ruthless, and it’s easy to lose sight of your original passion and vision. Stay grounded and focused on what matters to you.

It is certain that anywhere the winds of film blow, Dalton Zongshian Lu will surely spread his wings and soar. With passion in his choice of storytelling, his level of commitment and his interest in authenticity, his contribution to the film world is just starting.

From projects as personal as “Anywhere the Wind Blows” to his yet-to-be-released documentary about Taiwanese Americans, he is keen on making a lasting impression with all his projects. His advice to aspiring producers and directors to stay true to their vision serves as a beacon of inspiration in an industry that is never short of challenges.

Dalton Zongshian Lu’s contribution to cinema is bound to last through years already filled with notable achievements and a bright future.
