Christopher Nolan has rewritten the record books again. His sweeping adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon as the Greek king Odysseus, has surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine’s lifetime gross of $1.338 billion to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
The film’s worldwide earnings have climbed to $1.446 billion and show no signs of slowing, with key markets including China, Japan, and South Korea still ahead. The film is also now officially Nolan’s biggest career achievement, eclipsing The Dark Knight Rises’ $1.08 billion, and has become Imax’s highest-grossing release of all time globally, surpassing James Cameron’s Avatar with $271 million in Imax revenue alone.
The Odyssey opened to a stunning $124.5 million domestically on its July 17 debut — the biggest opening weekend for any non-franchised R-rated film in box office history. Premium large formats dominated the conversation, with Imax accounting for $51.8 million, or 23%, of global ticket sales on opening weekend alone. The film, the first feature ever shot entirely on Imax’s 70mm film cameras, carried a reported budget of $250 million — the most expensive production of Nolan’s career.
The director, who departed longtime collaborator Warner Bros. to sign with Universal, has described the project as his “longest-held ambition.” The adaptation stars Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Telemachus, and Mia Goth as Melantho, alongside an ensemble that stretches across the ancient Mediterranean world Nolan meticulously reconstructed on location.
The film’s second-weekend domestic performance — $87 million, a drop of just 30% — signaled extraordinary legs for such a premium-format, nearly-three-hour epic. For reference, Nolan’s previous blockbuster, Oppenheimer, had a second-weekend drop of 43.4%, yet still amassed $975 million worldwide.
At the global box office, 2026 is barreling toward historic territory. Industry analysts project the domestic market will post its first $10 billion-plus year since 2019, aided by a summer season that has already reached $4.6 billion — the second-best summer on record. Nolan’s Odyssey, alongside Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Toy Story 5, has been at the heart of that remarkable rebound.
Universal’s president of distribution, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, called Nolan “uniquely fit” to bring Homer’s poem to a global audience, noting that the epic resonated with filmgoers across every major territory.
