“5.7 Seconds” – Danger within and out.
"5.7 Seconds" is a short thriller/horror film directed by Tim Aslin ...
In The Perfect Tomato, writer and director Cristobal Abugaber delivers a heartfelt story that captures the complexities of family, tradition, and the sacrifices we make for the people we love. This beautifully crafted short film is a beautiful exploration of the connections that shape us. And it is all within just 18 minutes.
At the center of the story is Nacho, an ageing farmer who remains deeply tied to the land he has cultivated for decades. Eligio Meléndez’s portrayal of Nacho is both powerful and tender, showcasing the strength and vulnerability of a man whose life has been defined by service to his family. His love for his daughter, Elena, and granddaughter, María, is inseparable from his devotion to the tomato fields which he sees as his legacy.
Elena, played with brilliance by María Meléndez, is a woman with dreams and determination. A skilled potter, who believes she has been presented with a life-changing opportunity when a client offered to collaborate with her on opening a pottery store. The opportunity that would take her and her family to the city. She urges Nacho to join them, presenting this move as a chance for him to step away from the physically demanding life of farming.
Her optimism is infectious, yet it also lays bare the tension between her aspirations and her father’s steadfast connection to what he considers his home.
For Nacho, leaving the fields is more than a logistical challenge; it’s an emotional reckoning. The land represents his identity, his memories, and the life he built with his late wife. He expresses his resistance to leave. Despite his declining health, Nacho’s determination to keep working reflects a pride and purpose that are as inspiring as they are heartbreaking.
Visually, Cristobal Abugaber, captures every detail with a painter’s touch. The vibrant colours of the tomato farms also reflect the quiet beauty of rural life creating a setting that feels both timeless and intimate.
With dialogue in Spanish and English subtitles, the film’s emotional weight transcends language barriers. Everything the characters talk about resonates profoundly and serves as a reminder of the patience and care required to nurture both plants and relationships.
